Book Review!
The Selected Works of T. S. Spivet
I quite enjoyed it! I just finished it. Full of maps and digressions and careful, obsessive analysis of everyday life.
(The main character / the book itself somehow reminded me of Lukas, you should check it out)
It was a bit unusual, with a not entirely satisfying plot resolution, but it is the author’s debut work, so perhaps that is understandable.
One aspect I enjoyed was the feeling of time. In most books, authors will briefly write about long stretches of time, and go into detail about the more action-packed, fast-paced portions of the book. The result is for example, 10 pages to describe 5 minutes, and then 1 page to describe 5 hours. In T. S. Spivet, however, the long time spend on the train does indeed take a lot of time to read, and his time at his destination is quick and frenetic, without time for T. S. to stop and reflect.
I might just be adding it to my fave books list. (which is Remainder, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and Devil in the White City) If you liked any of those books, railroads, maps, or me, you should read T. S. Spivet!
