December 2009
Ok, what?   I noticed at 4:30pm that the toilet paper roll was empty, so I put a new one on.  I left the house, and when I returned at 10:30pm, it was empty again!  How does that happen?  Granted I live with 6 other people, but come on!

scottysramblings: ltwp: Suddenly! I question why I’m thinking about applying to art school. Industrial Design is what interests me, yeah, but it’s not a prerequisite to have a degree in I.D. to become one, no. But to be an engineer or mathematician or anything else, almost definitely. So instead of focusing on art schools I’ll be looking at more general institutions, ones that offer...

jonesy: is shag still playing basketball?
me: it appears so
jonesy: even after Shazam?
me: hahaha, yes.
jonesy: I am not sure if I would like to transform into a semi truck.
jonesy: I don't know how to put chains on tires, in the winter
me: I wouldn't mind being a transformer
me: maybe not into a semi truck
me: a jet would be good
jonesy: it would just be a series of awkward social circumstances
jonesy: "who parked this car here?"
jonesy: "jesus lady I can hear you"

In my next essay, draft due Tuesday, I need to “get real” with my thesis project.  As in, propose an actual site, and a building program.  Luckily this is the 1st of many drafts; it’s not finalized for another year. My reading and writing thus far has focused on Utopianism and housing.  (see Six Sentences exercise)  In talks with Prof H, we’ve established that...

Also, my cousin corrected me when I complained that werewolves don’t just turn into wolves.  She explained that they are actually shape-shifters.  I asked if they could turn into other things, but she said no, only wolves, because his family is “related to” wolves.  This makes sense?

Important news everyone:  “Rachel,” my 13 year old cousin, is on Team Jacob.  So am I. Also, is this “Team” thing actually in the books?  Or invented by fans?  And how could anyone be on Team Edward?  The actor is hideous, he’s a sparkly vampire, and that’s all I really know about him.  Give me werewolf shape-shifter beefcake any day.

My theory prof pulled me aside today to tell me that my writing case study analysis essay was amazing, probably the best, and that I should consider going into theory, as like a career or whatever. I’m not sure what’s going on.  I wrote the essay the night before (into the wee hours of the morning) and started the research the day before that, despite this being a project assigned 7...

Ruins Garden
quartey: Our design assignment required us to design a special place using the following architectural elements: 10 opaque planes, each measuring 4’x 6’x 6” thick 5 identical columns 1 pediment (approximately the thickness of one column) 1 base My solution - a “Ruins Garden” - was inspired by the ruins value theory of Hitler’s chief architect, Albert Speer, and drew minimally...

age-of-ecology: 1. The Garden Suburb The Garden Suburbs, as envisioned by Olmstead with Riverside, were much like modern suburbs, without retail or industry; he considered them part of the city, connected by rail. Rybczynski calls them a huge success, and considers the New Urbanist themed communities their direct descendant. 2. The Ville Radieuse Although designed by Le Corbusier in the...

Poop.  Got invited by “Chris” (thanks Dear Abby!) to go to Masque, a gay club in Dayton (an hour away) tonight because it was his friend’s last day working there and the guy could get us in no cover.  But then today, Chris says he’s not going anymore; he forgot that it was a (different) friend’s birthday.  So now I’ve got nothing to do tonight.  :(

cmpblldllghn: Sorry in advance for the long text post, but this is a really concise and brilliantly put theory of the sense of dread and anxiety that is now epidemic in our society: “In 1947, Lewis Mumford published a remarkable essay titled simply “Social Effects.” In it, he presented four scenarios of possible social futures in the atomic age. The first three result in nuclear war; yet the...

2 excellent questions before I go to class. Which designers and architects have inspired you most?  What made you want to study what you do? A tough one.  I am partial to the work of Nicholas Grimshaw, anything that Ove Arup (engineers, not architects, but I’d consider them designers) had a hand in… I would say I’ve been inspired by the last firm I worked at, Landon Bone...

Did you know that I admire you? I love to read your posts, you always make me smile and I sort of envision you as what my brother would be like if I had one. I think you are positively wonderful. I wish I knew you in real life! Wowzers, thanks!   Regarding your question, no I did not know, but as I am quite admirable, I tend to assume people do. Formspring!

How do you feel about the experience you’ve had in DAAP at U of Cincinnati? (academically, design-ly, socially, whatever else) [from TimZ, who is applying in Industrial Design] Oh, pretty good.  I imagine most schools are basically the same, objectively speaking.  The best way to tell is just to visit the place.  UC has the co-op thing, which is really nice, because you get paid, and also...
